The Little Potato Company Helps Parents and Kids Have Fun and Learn by Cooking Together

Canada’s Best Little Chef Could Win a Family Culinary Trip for 3 to Paris, France

Edmonton, AB–(September 21, 2015) The Little Potato Company has launched a new website featuring The Little Chef Program, offering recipes and tips to help parents and kids spend time together cooking, having fun and learning new skills.

“We have long believed that our Little Potatoes can help feed the world better. A great place to start is motivating kids to eat their vegetables and encouraging parents to cook with their kids to help them learn about cooking and healthy food,” said Angela Santiago, Chief Executive Officer of The Little Potato Company.

“We want to inspire kids and families to make meals together. Our little potatoes are fun and easy to cook with, kids will love their small size, various colours and taste and it’s a fun way to create memories”

When parents engage kids in the kitchen, not only will they learn to cook, but they’ll also learn math, nutrition, where food comes from, planning, social skills and family food traditions and stories Mom and Dad share with them as they prep and cook together.

Canada’s Food Guide recommends kids eat four to six servings of fruit and vegetables a day, and Health Canada recognizes that food preparation and cooking skills impact both kids’ and teens’ food choices. When kids are exposed to fresh, unprocessed foods and learn to prepare them well, they are more likely to feel comfortable cooking these foods as adults.

Although potatoes are the most frequently eaten vegetable in Canada, some people are surprised to learn about the nutritional benefits and convenience of Creamers, which provide even more reason they’re a great food ingredient for budding Little Chefs:

  • Most importantly, Creamers  are a vegetable
  • Creamers are little, but all grown up – they aren’t an immature version of bigger potatoes
  • One serving of Creamers delivers more potassium than a banana, so they’re an excllent source of potassium
  • They’re also a source of Vitamin C and dietary fibre, contain antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals to help meet dietary goals
  • Creamers are naturally fat, gluten and cholesterol free
  • Creamers are pre-washed and thin-skinned, so no peeling is required
  • Average cooking time for Creamers is under 15 minutes

The Little Chef Program includes Little Chef Approved recipes, age-appropriate tasks for kids 5 to 7, 8 to 10, and 11 to 13 year olds, and an overview of the important skills they’ll learn as they progress in the kitchen. The Little Chef Approved recipes are popular not only with kids, but with adults, too. Recipes include Smashed Potato Pizza, Bacon Wrapped Creamers and Little Chef Potato Skins.

The Little Chef Casting Call:

The Little Potato Company is currently sponsoring a contest with The Marilyn Denis Show on CTV to invite Canada’s keenest little chefs, ages 8 to 13, to create and share a video showing them preparing their favourite original recipe using small potatoes.
